Apple market surges over two years

The average shipping point price for U.S. conventional apples has surged over the past two years, USDA reported prices show.

The average price per count carton for all U.S. conventional apples was $34.14, up 16% from about $29.40 per carton the same time last year and up 22% from $27.98 per carton the same time two years ago.

The average promoted retail price for U.S. conventional apples was $1.47 per pound at the end of December, up 24% from $1.19 per pound a year ago and up 18% from $1.25 per pound from two years ago, the USDA said.

For organic apples, the USDA reports the average promoted retail price was $1.84 per pound at the end of December, up 8% from $1.71 per pound the same time a year ago, and up 28% from $1.44 per pound the same time two years ago.
