Michigan asparagus looks to have two more weeks left of its season. “We’re on the wind-down,” says Trish Taylor, marketing manager for Riveridge Produce Marketing, Inc. “Particularly with the temperatures right now. It’s pretty warm and Southwest Michigan has already wrapped. We are done to maybe two more weeks for more northern Michigan asparagus.”

While the end to the general six to eight-week asparagus season in the state can vary depending largely on weather developments, Taylor believes this year was a fairly typical season. “Though it is dry and pretty warm right now, we are perhaps wrapping the season a bit sooner,” adds Taylor.

Consistent pricing

Meanwhile, demand is steady for Michigan asparagus and pricing is solid and similar to last year. Taylor anticipates that to stay consistent as the season closes out. She also urges those who are interested in supporting local farmers to act now. “Asparagus used to be only available in the spring in the U.S. but it’s so easily imported now,” she says. “If you want to support your local Michigan asparagus growers, this is the time to act.”

Taylor also says that for Michigan growers, many of them are also specialty crop growers and the asparagus season helps fund the start of their local growing seasons.
