Peruvian table grape exports increased by 40% in the first quarter of the campaign

Grape exports continue to increase. In the first three months of the 2023-2024 campaign (October-December), exports amounted to US$1.058 billion, i.e. 40% more than the US$753,689,000 achieved in the same period of the 2022-2023 campaign, according to the Peruvian Association of Exporters (ADEX).

“This result is partly due to the advance of the campaign in northern and southern Peru caused by Cyclone Yaku and the El Niño weather phenomena -which could have a negative impact in January or February- and the greater demand from some Asian countries before the start of the Chinese New Year (when a lot of grapes are consumed),” ADEX stated.

“We need to continue advancing in the pending agenda so that Peru does not give up its position at the global level,” stated Claudia Solano Oré, the union’s Agroexports manager. In the 2022-2023 campaign, Peru was the world’s leading grape exporter, according to the Fluctuante consultancy and based on data from the US Department of Agriculture.

Some of the issues pending are the eradication of the fruit fly and other pests, disease monitoring, exploring more markets, and getting other destinations to lift their health requirements, as was achieved a few months ago in Japan.

More than 50 varieties

Solano Oré added that Peru exports more than 50 grape varieties. Exports are led by the White Seedless variety, followed by the Red Seedless, Red Globe, and Black Seedless varieties. “Consumers now prefer seedless varieties; however, in Asia, they prioritize the Red Globe variety because of its flavor and texture,” he said.

According to data from the ADEX Data Trade Commercial Intelligence System, the US was the main destination in the first three months of the 2023-2024 campaign (October-December) with a 47% share. It was followed by the Netherlands, Mexico, Hong Kong, China, the United Kingdom, Canada, Spain, Taiwan, and South Korea.

Within the top 20 markets, Hong Kong (130%), the Dominican Republic (96%), El Salvador (87%), Mexico (62%) and Guatemala (60%) stand out for their growth. In addition, the Peruvian fruit entered Japan for the first time (with sales worth about US $8 million).

In 2023 (January-December) Peruvian grape exports amounted to US $1,745,479,000 thousand, 30% more than the $1.346 billion achieved in the same period of 2022.
