Mango consumption continues to grow in the United States

The National Mango Board highlighted that, despite the difficulties caused by the COVID-19 health crisis in 2020, mango consumption in the United States had continued to grow.
“We still don’t have all the figures, but we have seen an increase in per capita consumption,” said Manuel Michel, the executive director of the National Mango Board. “Normally, mango consumption increases by 3 to 4 percent a year. This year it will increase by 5 percent or more. In 2020 consumption increase by 3.4 to 3.5 pounds per person.”

“This is the time of year when mango consumption decreases a bit. It has been increasing over the years during the holiday season. At the peak of the mango season, 3.5 to 4 million boxes of mangos will arrive per week. Generally, between Thanksgiving and New Years’, only 1.5 to 2 million boxes per week arrive,” said Michel.

Increase in online sales
“We saw consumption habits change during the pandemic of 2020. There was a great increase in online sales, which caused food deliveries to skyrocket. We estimate that once the pandemic ends, online food sales will remain stable,” Michel said.
“Despite the difficult times we have endured due to COVID-19, mango is an increasingly important food in the diet of American consumers. That’s why, thanks to the work of the National Mango Board, it will continue to grow in the coming years,” he added.
