By Agronometrics | 18 March 2024

In 2023, Peru emerged as the second-largest exporter of fresh fruits to the United States, reporting a substantial export value of US$ 2,277 million (CIF amount), constituting 12% of the total imports received by the nation, which amounted to US$ 18,955 million. This position, as disclosed by Gonzalo Ibáñez, an international regulatory expert from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for Latin America, positioned Peru ahead of esteemed competitors such as Chile, Guatemala, and Costa Rica, albeit trailing behind Mexico. Ibáñez underscored the remarkable growth of Peruvian food exports to the United States over the years, culminating in Peru’s ascent to the 14th position among global suppliers to the country, with exports totaling just over US$ 4 billion (CIF amount) the previous year. Ibáñez noted the exponential growth in fresh fruit exports from Peru; fresh vegetable exports experienced a notable surge from US$50 million in 2000 to US$345 million in 2023. Furthermore, Ibáñez emphasized Peru’s dominance as the leading supplier of table grapes, accounting for US$ 992 million, representing 40% of the total, surpassing competitors like Mexico, Chile, and Brazil. Similarly, Peru led the market in blueberry exports with US$ 867 million, capturing 49% of the total market share, outpacing Mexico, Chile, and Canada. Ibáñez also lauded Peru’s promising performance in other fruit categories such as citrus, mangoes, and avocados, signaling significant potential for further market penetration in the United States.
