Agronometrics Shorts: Brazil’s Fresh Fruit Exports Hit Record High Amidst Global Climatic Challenges

By Agronometrics | 12 December 2023

Brazil’s export revenue from fresh fruits soared to US$1.08 billion between January and November 2023, marking a remarkable 30.4% increase in terms of value compared to the same period in 2022. This surpasses the previous annual record set in 2021 at US$1.1 billion. Data from the Center for Advanced Studies on Applied Economics (CEPEA) at the University of São Paulo (USP) reveals that Brazil exported over 940 thousand tons of fresh fruits during this period, representing an impressive 11.9% growth compared to 2022. Brazil’s resounding success this season is attributed to climatic challenges faced by nations such as Peru, Ecuador, and Spain. CEPEA’s research highlights the outstanding performance of Brazilian mangoes, grapes, limes, lemons, melons, and watermelons in the export market during 2023. The favorable climate in the Northeast region, particularly influenced by El Niño, has significantly boosted both volume and quality. This success not only reinforces Brazil’s position as a global agricultural powerhouse but also underscores its competitiveness in the international fresh fruit trade. The data from the Secretariat of Foreign Trade (Secex) supports Brazil’s robust growth, portraying the nation as a reliable and key player in the global market.
