Steady supplies and lower pricing on Mexican avocados

Supplies of avocados from Mexico are currently strong and steady.

“We have excellent supplies of Mexican avocados,” says Peter Shore with Santa Paula, CA-based Calavo Growers Inc. He adds that at the moment Michoacán is the growing region in the country.

Shore says that overall, the Mexican crop is forecast to be 20 percent larger than last year’s crop of avocados. “The size curve is even and there’s a good mix of all sizes. Comparatively, we are seeing larger sizes–48s, 40s and 36s.”

Retail demand strong

Those good supplies are seeing solid demand. “Consumer demand is strong for avocados with consistent retail promotions backed by excellent supply,” says Shore. “Increased supplies are giving way to good promotions and consistent retail avocado sales.”

That’s also helping make up for the lower foodservice demand for avocados. “As we go into the holidays, there’s usually stronger demand with individual parties in people’s homes. Which is difficult this year. Consumers are still at home,” he says, adding that avocados are part of a healthy diet. “So, where we see our foodservice demand is down, our retail demand is stronger.”

Looking ahead, “We see good supplies forecasted to keep going through the month of January,” adds Shore.
