Kingsburg, CA-based Scattaglia Growers & Shippers LLC prides itself on growing some of the finest red, green and black seedless grapes in the state of California.

“Our growers are very passionate about what they do, and they ensure that the fruit reaches optimum size and flavor for customer enjoyment,” said Craig Calandra, horticulture specialist for SGS.

This year, SGS is expecting its early San Joaquin Valley grapes to hit stores around July 11-15. When The Produce News spoke with Calandra in late May, the crop was just coming out of bloom and running about three and a half weeks late.

“Shatter looks good, going from bloom to shatter now,” Calandra said. “We are starting to size some of the early Flames and Ivory’s, bunch structure is nice this year, plenty of crop to work with. Everything looks good right now.”

Although the weather this season has delayed the crop, it has also provided it with good, deep moisture from all the rain, resulting in “vibrant and healthy” grapes, said Calandra.

SGS grows many varieties of seedless grapes, including Flames, Ivory, Timpson, Scarlett Royal, Allison, Autumn King, Autumn Royal and Crimson. It also grows a new variety called Solbrio black seedless grapes.

“It is an early mid-season, black-skinned seedless table grape with large, crunchy and colorful textured berries,” Calandra said of the Solbrio grapes.

“These berries play an essential role in keeping customers satisfied with its deliciously sweet flavor.”

As for other news from SGS, the company recently promoted Steve Rusca to general manager; brought on Kira Navison as its marketing director; and added Alexandra Gomez to its accounting department.
