This was revealed by Isabel Quiroz, executive director of iQonsulting, in her presentation at the second Primores Cherries seminar, held in Ovalle. Quiroz recalled that in the season prior to the pandemic (2018-2019), Peru made its first trial export “with fruit from the highlands that cost them an arm and a leg.”

“It is going to be very costly, because there are no roads or infrastructure; they will have to ship the fruit by plane from the highlands to Lima, and then by plane again to China. The country also lacks Chile’s finesse, but it can import technicians, and the truth is that with the experience we have with blueberries, asparagus and table grapes, I think all the problems with ports, roads, etc. will be addressed just to get to China. And you (Ovalle producers) are going to have to face that competition,” since the shipments would be made between weeks 44-45, coinciding with the peak in northern Chile’s production.
