Agronometrics Shorts: Emphasis on Operational Efficiency and Premiumization Will Transform the Blueberry Industry – Rabobank
According to a recent report by Rabobank, the global blueberry industry stands at the threshold of significant expansion, contingent upon embracing operational efficiency and premiumization. North America, especially the United States, remains the primary market for fresh and frozen blueberries. Peru, Mexico, and Chile lead as the largest exporters in the fresh category. Despite supply-side challenges like logistics and input costs, the industry is on a path to improvement. The focus on efficiency, productivity, and fruit quality is paramount to meet the escalating global demand. Recent years have seen a steady rise in global fresh blueberry exports, with countries like Peru, South Africa, Morocco, Mexico, Poland, and Spain driving this growth. Potential lingering effects of El Niño-related weather anomalies are likely to limit the rebound of Peruvian exports in 2024/25. However, in the longer run, Rabobank forecasts that global fresh blueberry exports will resume a growth trajectory as yields improve in Peru and exports from other growing regions continue to expand. By 2026/27, global fresh blueberry exports are expected to exceed 1 million metric tons. Peru, Mexico, and Chile continue to dominate the fresh blueberry export market, albeit facing challenges like delayed harvests and declining exports in certain regions. In the frozen blueberry sector, the United States witnesses a rising trend, with Canada, Chile, Peru, and Argentina being major sources. Frozen blueberries are gaining popularity due to their health benefits, convenience, flavor, and versatility, making them a staple in the American market. The blueberry industry’s future hinges on technological adoption, variety upgrades, and meeting consumer demands. Despite challenges, the industry’s resilience and strategic innovations position it for remarkable success, ensuring a prosperous future in the global market.
