Agronometrics Shorts: Cherry Prices Witness a 56% Plunge Compared to 2022

By Agronometrics | 11 July 2023

Week 27 saw cherry prices dropping to $30.21 per package, owing largely to the surfeit of supplies coming in from Washington. Cherry growers in Washington are experiencing a delayed but bountiful harvest. “Possibly the latest we have ever seen,” says B.J. Thurlby, president of Washington State Fruit Commission. According to the USDA, projections for Oregon are pegged at around 50.8 K tonnes — including Chelan, Bing and Rainier varieties. According to an estimate by Northwest Cherry Growers, the five-state region: Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Utah could potentially harvest 19.9 million 20-pound boxes this year. These figures indicate a surge of over 50% in contrast to the 2022 crop yield of 13.3 million boxes, which stood as the smallest crop in the region since 2008.
