Peruvian avocado exports affected by low prices

Overview of avocados from Peru in the U.S. market, complemented by charts from Agronometrics. Original published on October 28, 2022.
Peruvian avocado exports are exported during most of the year, however, from January to September is when 99 percent of shipments are made. During this period of 2022, avocado shipments totaled 613,947 tons worth $976 million, resulting in a growth in volume of 11 percent but a decrease in value of 10 percent.
The drop in price in key markets attributed to this decrease in value, where the average Peruvian exported only received $1.59 per kilogram, one of the lowest prices recorded in the last four years, as reported by Peru’s Fresh Fruit media.

In 2017 there were about 18,000 hectares of avocado in Peru and by the end of 2022 it is forecasted that about 43,000 hectares will be reached. Regions that have stood out the most in production are La Libertad, Lambayeque, and Lima with 34, 20, and 15 percent of the participation, respectively.
Until 2022, the main destinations for Peruvian avocados were the Netherlands with a 29 percent share, the U.S. with 28 percent, and Spain with 14 percent.

Exports to the Netherlands totaled 195,208 tons worth $285 million with 8 percent more in volume and 18 percent less in value compared to the same period last year.
The U.S. received 145,736 tons worth $276 million with 46 percent more in volume and 37 percent more in value, while 99,100 tons were shipped to Spain worth $141 million with 13 percent more in volume and 19 percent less in value.
