Michoacan’s blackberry production increased by almost 9% in the first quarter

Michoacan is Mexico’s main blackberry producer, accounting for 94% of the national production. In the first quarter of the year, the state increased its blackberry production to 96,596.42 tons, i.e. 9% more than in the same period of the previous year.
According to statistics from the Agri-Food and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP), 8,929 hectares were allocated to this crop this year and they’ve had an average yield of 11.80 tons per hectare, one more ton than at the beginning of 2021.

The Ministry of Rural and Agri-Food Development (Sader) said the state’s production volume had shown significant growth due to the improvement of cultivation techniques, a decisive factor that has allowed the state to achieve greater and better yields, both in quality, quantity, and price.

In fact, during the previous state administration, blackberry was one of 24 crops within the Sustainable Agriculture program, which sought, through microbial agents, to improve the quality of Michoacan crops, reduce investment in inputs, and promote more environmentally sustainable practices.
The main producing municipalities are Los Reyes, which between January and April produced just over 38,700 tons, and Periban, which produced almost 26,000 tons. They are followed by Tacambaro, with 9,500 tons; Tocumbo, with 6,000 tons, and Ario, with 3,625 tons of blackberry during the first four months of the year.
