In the United States, Marion blackberries have long held the title of “the king of blackberries.” However, the Triple Crown blackberry is emerging as a formidable contender. Named for its three standout attributes – superior flavour, hardiness, and large yields – this cultivar was developed by a USDA breeding program in Beltsville, Maryland, and introduced in 1996.

The Triple Crown is a thornless, disease-resistant plant producing large, flavourful berries, setting it apart from the common Rubus fruticosus species and the Marion variety. While Marion berries dominate production in Oregon, the heart of U.S. blackberry cultivation, and Mexican growers prefer the Tupy cultivar for imports, Triple Crown blackberries are increasingly favoured by home gardeners across the United States, indicating a rising popularity of this variety.
