Even as retailers turn their attention toward other summer produce items such as stone fruit, grapes and cherries, the mango industry continues to push the copious volume of fruit still available from Mexico, hoping to cover mango retail promotions in the U.S.

“We are indeed reaching the end of our Jaguar mangos (Ataulfos), but we have inventory to supply those who might still need small yellows 18/20/22s for summertime promotions through week 31,” said Cindy Schwing, vice president of marketing and retail sales at Splendid by Porvenir, a leading shipper of Mexican mangos. “We just celebrated Mango Day on July 22, and it’s the perfect time to incorporate tropical themes  and other mango industry themes. And don’t forget — mangos are wonderful grilled, too!”

Schwing said Splendid is already into its Kent program out of Los Mochis, closely followed by Keitts (or “Keitt Kongs” as they are known at Splendid), so there will be mango supply through September for retailers to count on without having to look at offshore sources any time soon.

According to estimates taken from the National Mango Board crop report, Mexico crossed over 4 million boxes per week during the last six weeks. Even with this, prices have maintained a regular pace, keeping the market steady.

Schwing said demand continues to be strong and all indications are that mango consumption is up.

“We’d like to finish the season strong and we invite all those interested to give us a call,” she said. “We’ll set something up with you.”
